On 26th June 2009, UNESCO included these calcite mountains located in northeastern Italy on its list of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. By this action, the United Nations has officially recognized, through its organization for education, science and culture, the unique nature of the Dolomites. Now the Dolomites, with their famous peaks, including the Three Peaks of Lavaredo (2,999 m) will take their rightful place among the most beautiful mountains in the world.

Summer visitors to South Tyrol will be attracted by the region's outdoor offerings.
On sunday, July 12 the 15th round of the International Cycling Union's "Dolomiti Superbike" Mountain Bike Race takes place in Alta Pusteria/Hochpustertal. The event, which is renowned for its arduousness, attracts more competitors than any other event of its kind in Italy and expects to see up to 3,500 participants. Entrants can choose between two distances, 115.5 and 60.5 kilometres, both starting/finishing at the village of Villabasa/Niederdorf.
