The development of Sesto

Sexten in Hochpustertal: Berge und Kirche prägten

Sesto has about 2,000 inhabitants and comprises more than 80 km² of the Außerbauerschaft, Außerberg, Kiniger, Mitterberg, Moos, Schmieden and St. Veit harbours.

In 965, the entire valley was handed over to the convent in Innichen by Emperor Otto I. Then, the valley was still called "Sexta" which comes from Latin and is derived from the word "six". During the course of the Middle Age it was renamed in "Valle Sexta".

The eventful history of Sesto

During the 15th and 16th centuries troops advanced from the Venetian area over the Kreuzbergsattel mountain pass several times. During the 19th century Sesto became renowned as a mountain guides village.

During World War I Sesto was affected by the war zone around the Three Peaks. The stone blocks with loopholes Mitterberg and Haideck still extend outside the village in an easterly and southerly direction.

Culture and Tradition in Alta Pusteria

The charming village of Sesto is not only renowned as a summer and winter sports destination. The beautiful Tyrolean cribs, sculptors, the monuments in the surrounding areas, and a lot of culture and tradition also make this village a jewel. Embedded in a splendid mountain world and away from the hustle and bustle of bigger towns, you can find recreational activities for all tastes.

The SestoTheme Path

The path consists of two parts and leads around Sesto. This is an easy, yet interesting hike. The first part (approx. 3 hours with stop at the stations) on the north-eastern part of the valley covers the historic part in 7 "stations" with the Sesto sundial, legends, the "Spitzköfele", fauna, history, Sesto millstones and the water mill.

On the south side you get to know more about nature with the age of trees, the traces of animals, mushrooms, roots, the Heideck Fortress, woodpeckers, larch meadows and the South Tyrolean nature parks (walking time including stop approx. 2 hours). Both parts can also be combined with each other. The theme path is an easy hike with minimal difference in altitude, hence also ideal for children.
